Major Geoffrey Hugh Walsh was born in October 1925 and commissioned into the Indian Army in February 1945. He served with the 6th Gurkha Rifles from 1948 until the time of his retirement in June 1965, by which time he had attained the rank of Major. In 1953 he commanded the Coronation Contingent when it travelled from Malaya to London.

In 1963 during the first days of the Indonesian confrontation he was Second in Command of the 2/6th Gurkha Rifles when it deployed in the western half of the Third Division of Sarawak. During these operations he had a Tactical H.Q. and controlled ‘B’ and ‘C’ Companies in the Sarikie and Binatauy areas. He controlled the operation in which elements of his force, together waith a company of the Parachute Regiment and S.A.S. detachments, had one of their first major contacts with Indonesian troops. Lieutenant Wallace of the 2/6th Gurkha Rifles was killed during these operations.
