Francis Stuart Thompson was born in September 1912 and educated at the Imperial Service College and Haileybury College. He was commissioned into the Northamptonshire Regiment (Reserve of Officers) in November 1932, promoted Lieutenant, November 1935 and mobilised on the outbreak of World War II. He served with the Northampton’s during the fighting in France in 1940 and was taken prisoner of war, being held in Oflag 79 (Braunschweig) where he remained for the duration of the war. After the Second World War Thompson applied for a Regular Army Commision and was appointed to the rank of Captain in October 1946, being promoted Major in September 1949, with which rank he retired in May 1958.

The Northamptonshire Regiment were not present in Malaya as a unit and Major Thompson received his clasp whilst on detached duty commanding a garrison. During the Korean War, the 1st Battalion arrived after the end of organised hostilities and therefore received the U.N. Korea Medal only.
