Charles Neal Ascherson was born in Edinburgh on 5 October 1932. Educated at Eton, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Marines in July 1951. Served as an Acting Lieutenant in 42 Commando R.M. in Malaya and Malta. His commission in the R.M. was terminated on 6 September 1952, being appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the R.M.F.V.R. on the same day. He was promoted to Lieutenant in July 1955 and he retired from the service in 1956. He attended King’s College, Cambridge, 1952-55, gaining a B.A. in 1955 and a M.A. in 1961. After university he was employed as a reporter with the Manchester Guardian 1956-58; Commonwealth Correspondent with The Scotsman, 1960-70; and reporter with The Observer, 1970-71. He was also a Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford. Sold with some copied service details.
