Douglas Heald first entered the French theatre as a private soldier in the Rifle Brigade in June 1917. Subsequently commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, he joined the 1st Battalion and died of wounds following an action at Poelcapelle in the 3rd battle of Ypres on 6 October 1917. Aged 25 years, and the son of Hugh and Florence heald of Ormskirk, Lancashire, he is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery at Westvleteren, Belgium.
