Walter Jones, who was born in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, was killed in action on the Somme on 10 July 1916, while serving with the 13th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. On that date, his unit attacked the German frontline and suffered casualties of 20 officers and 380 other ranks. Jones has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial; so, too, on a memorial tablet in St. Peter’s Church, Goodwick, Pembrokeshire.
