James Little was born in Preston, Lancashire and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in April 1895, aged 19 years. Drafted to the 1st Battalion in Singapore in October of the following year, he returned to the U.K. in early 1898 and was re-embarked for South Africa in October 1899. Little subsequently served throughout the Boer War and was wounded at Tugela Falls on 20 February 1899, while a member of ‘I’ Company. Transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1902, he was finally discharged in April 1907.
