Richard Tattersall was born in Radcliffe, Manchester and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in March 1898, aged 19 years. Having then served in the 2nd Battalion in Crete from March to October 1899, he was embarked with his unit for South Africa, where he served throughout the duration of the Boer War and won entitlement to the above described Medals & clasps - he was presented with his Queen’s South Africa Medal at a special regimental parade in Cairo by H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught in December 1902. Transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1906, Tattersall was finally discharged in March 1910.
