This lot was sold as part of a special collection, The Collection of Medals to the Cheshire and Manchester Regiments, Rifle Brigade and Royal Green Jackets formed by the late David Boniface.

Walter Alexander Moore was born in Norwich, Norfolk and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in November 1895, aged 21 years. Posted to the 3rd Battalion in India in November 1896, he served in the Punjab Frontier operations of 1897-98, and remained employed in that country until returning home as a Pioneer Sergeant in the 4th Battalion in November 1914. Immediately re-embarked for France, he remained actively employed in that theatre of war from late December 1914 to November 1915 - thereby gaining entitlement to the 1914-15 Star. Thereafter, until November 1917, he served in the Balkans, but he was discharged at the end of that year and awarded the Silver War Badge - the official roll for the latter stating as a result of wounds, although no evidence of this is to be found in his discharge papers.
