Robert Caulter - or Coulter according to his discharge papers - was born at Market Hill, Armagh and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in September 1848, aged 17 years. He subsequently served with the 1st Battalion in the Cape of Good Hope, in the Crimea and in Canada, thereby earning entitlement to the Crimea Medal & 3 clasps and the Canada General Service Medal & clasp, in addition to the above described award. Discharged in Montreal, Canada at the end of his second period of engagement in May 1870, his gave his intended place of residence as Hamilton, Ontario.
