Three: Private T. Lloyd, Cheshire Regiment, who was killed in action with the 8th Battalion in Mesopotamia in April 1916

Thomas Lloyd, who was born at Newton Heath, Lancashire, but resident at Bredbury, near Stockport on his enlistment, was killed in action at Fallahiya on 5 April 1916, during the relief of Kut operations, while serving in the 8th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. Sergeant J. H. Wheeldon, a fellow native of Bredbury, wrote to Lloyd’s mother a few days later:

‘Your son Tommy was killed in action on 5th April and died in a few seconds. He did not suffer, thank God. He died like a hero in the face of the dirty dogs the enemy. I was only a few yards away from him. If God spares me to come home I will tell all about it. There are only two Bredbury lads here, Private H. Ashworth and myself.’

Sadly Sergeant Wheeldon was not spared, dying in June 1916. Tommy Lloyd was 27 years of age, has no known grave and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.
