L. E. Holland was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry, 20 December 1914 and granted the temporary rank of Lieutenant on 6 July 1915. He served in Gallipoli, August 1915-January 1916 and with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, April-August 1916.
