John Kerr was born in Liverpool. A Groom by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Liverpool Regiment, he attested for the Liverpool Regiment at Warrington on 13 May 1887, aged 18 years, 4 months. In April 1890, after several times being absent without leave, he was convicted of desertion and sentenced to 6 months hard labour. In August 1890, whilst still serving his sentence, he was transferred to the 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment. With them he served in India, October 1890-February 1898. In the latter month he transferred to the Army Reserve and in April was posted to the 3rd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers and served with them in Malta, August 1898-April 1899. He was discharged on 23 May 1899. Sold with copied attestation papers and summary of service.
