Coghlan, 89th Foot) the first two with edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise better than good fine, the last nearly extremely fine (3) £800-1000

L.S. & G.C. medal notified in General Order, dated ‘Head Quarters, Ootacamund 7 August 1878.

M.S.M. notified in Army Order 47 of February 1913.

Joseph Coghlan was born in about 1841 in the Parish of Birr, King’s County, Ireland. He attested for the 45th Regiment at Manchester on 19 January 1858, aged 17 years 9 months. He was promoted Corporal in April 1862, Sergeant in April 1864, and Colour-Sergeant in November 1866, in which rank he served in the Abyssinian expedition of 1867. Coghlan was appointed Hospital Sergeantat the Convalescent Depot at Wellington, in India, in February 1869, and was transferred from the 45th Foot to the Unattached List of the Madras Army at the same time.

Coghlan transferred to the 65th Brigade and the 89th Foot on 31 July 1877, and continued to serve as Hospital Sergeant at Wellington until November 1879. He was discharged at Netley on 13 July 1880, having served 22 years 86 days. Joseph Coghlan died on 14 January 1914, at Twickenham, Middlesex, aged 73. Sold with copy service papers and relevant General and Army Orders.
