James Edward Friars was born on 15 June 1856, and served for many years as a soldier, both in the Regular Army and in the Yeomanry. As a Regular he served in the 1st Dragoon Guards and was a Corporal during the Zulu War of 1877-79, for which he received a medal. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal in as a Troop Sergeant-Major in Army Order 185 of April 1889, and was discharged to pension in January 1898. He afterwards joined the Yeomanry and became R.S.M. to the Westmoreland and Cumberland Yeomanry, receiving the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal in 1909 (A.O. 7 of 1 January). Many years later he was awarded the M.S.m. and Annuity (A.O. 163 of 30 September 1932) as Squadron Sergeant-Major, late 1st Dragoons Guards. James Friars died on 19 August 1940, at Uxbridge, Middlesex, aged 84.
