George Fielding was born in the Parish of Billington, Lancashire, in January 1795. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery at the age of 17 at Blackburn on 25 January 1812, and was attested at Clitheroe the following day. He served as a Gunner and Driver in the 3rd Battalion, and took part in the Waterloo campaign as part of Major J. Brome’s Company. He was promoted Bombardier and Corporal in May 1823, to Colour-Sergeant in February 1827 and, in November 1835, was transferred to the Invalid Detachment as a Sergeant. He was discharged at Brighton on 8 April 1851, completing his service of 40 years 98 days, during which he had served 3 years 7 months in France and 1 year 4 months in Portugal. Fielding was awarded one of nine annuity M.S.Ms issued to the Royal Artillery on 18 April 1848 - these were in fact the first such awards to the Regiment as they claimed none in the previous year.
