Arthur Flatman was born on 24 May 1875, and joined the Army on about 3 November 1893. He served as a Sergeant in the 77th Battery R.F.A. during the Boer War and was mentioned in Kitchener’s despatch of 23 June 1902. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1912 as a Battery Sergeant-Major (A.O. 104 of 1 April 1912), and was promoted a (Regimental) Sergeant-Major in February 1915. Flatman was granted a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, R.H.A. and R.F.A., on 6 March 1915, and served in France and Belgium from 9 July 1915 until 31 May 1918, as Adjutant of the 15th Divisional Ammunition Column from March 1916 to 21 May 1918. He was promoted Lieutenant in December 1916, granted the acting rank of Captain in August 1917, and retired on retired pay on account of ill-health contracted on active service on 8 May 1919.
