Sgt. R. Harwood, Q. B. R.H.A.); 1914-15 Star (Q.M. & Lieut. R. Harwood, E. York. R.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaf (Q.M. & Lieut. R. Harwood); Army L.S. & G.C., E.VII.R. (50353 B.Q.M. Sgt. R. Harwood, R.H.A.); Italy, Order of the Crown, 5th Class breast badge , gold and enamels; Egypt, Order of the Nile, 5th Class breast badge by Lattes, silver, gilt and enamel; Iraq, Order of El Rafidain, 5th Class breast badge, silver, gilt and enamels, cleaned and mounted court style for display, the second with light contact marks, otherwise nearly extremely fine (9) £1200-1500

Robert I’Anson Harwood was born on 16 September 1865. He served for many years in the Royal Artillery and was B.Q.M.S. in “Q” Battery, R.H.A., during the Boer War, and received his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1904 (A.O. 172 of 1 October 1904). During the Great War he was appointed a temporary Quartermaster with the Honorary rank of Lieutenant, 22 September 1914, and served on the Western Front with the 8th (Service) Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. He was mentioned in despatches and promoted to Captain in September 1917.

After the war harwood joined the Royal Household and was appointed Accountant in the Royal Mews in May 1921. Here he served 12 years, retiring on 16 May 1933. During this service he received three foreign decorations: the Order of the Crown of Italy, possibly for service during the State Visit of H.M. King Victor Emmanuel and Queen Elena in May 1924; the Order of the Nile of Egypt, possibly for service during the State Visit of H.M. King Fuad in July 1927; and the Order of EL Rafidain of Iraq, given by H.M. King Faisal during his State Visit in 1933. This last award was published in the
Iraq Government Gazette of 2 August 1936, three years after the Visit and two years after Harwood’s death, which took place on 25 March 1934.
