Arthur Douglas Cowburn was born in about 1870 and received his medical training at St Thomas’s Hospital and at University College, London; M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., London, 1897; M.D., Brussels, 1898; D.P.H. 1900. He was called to the Bar in 1903 by the Middle Temple and was Medical Officer of Health to the Honourable Societies of the Inner and Middle Temples. In 1912 he was appointed Deputy Coroner, Western District, County of London, and after other transfers he became Coroner, Southern District, until 1939 when he retired.

He joined the R.N.V.R. at an early age and was appointed Surgeon in the London Division on 28 October 1904. He served as a Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander during the Great War, being promoted to Surgeon Commander in October 1916, and was placed on the Retired List as Surgeon Captain on 18 January 1926. Awarded the R.N.V.R. L.S. & G.C. medal during the reign of Edward VII, he was awarded the R.N.V.R. Decoration on 22 March 1920. Surgeon Captain Cowburn died in London on 27 March 1944, aged 74.
