A rare London, Midland and Scottish Railway Medal for Courage pair awarded to Special Constable Herbert George Thomas for service in the ‘Sheffield Blitz’

Defence, with Commendation laurel leaves, unnamed as issued; London, Midland and Scottish Railway Medal for Courage, silver (Special Constable Herbert George Thomas, Sheffield (Wicker) 12th December 1940) reverse exergue inscribed, ‘1940’, minor edge bruising, good very fine (2) £1000-1400

The L.M.S. Medal could be awarded with either the words ‘For Courage’ or ‘For Merit’ appearing on the reverse. It is believed that only about 20 medals were awarded. See Four Railway Gallantry Awards by B. G. Faulconbridge, The Numismatic Circular, May 1979, for a general article on the medal.
