Ex Dawson Collection; ref. Spink Exhibition 1985, No.169.

Bishop, Frederick, 3rd Class Fireman and Tizard, William J., 3rd Class Fireman, 12 February 1895.

‘At a fire in Kensington Court, Tizard entered a room where two children were in bed, passing them through the window to Bishop, who carried them safely down. Tizard then resumed his search, but the terrible heat and smoke forced him to retire’ (Ref.
British Calender of Heroes).

‘The Chief Officer has brought to our notice the conduct of F. Bishop and W. J. Tizard, who saved life at a fire on 12th February, under circumstances which in his opinion justify them being awarded the Council’s silver medal for extraordinary bravery. The circumstances are these: On the night in question a call was received to a fire in Kensington Court. On the arrival of men and appliances from Kensington Station endeavours were made to pitch a fire-escape to a window but as this could not be effected the machine was removed to another position where it was possible to pitch it against a window on the second floor. Tizard entered the building and found in bed two children whom he speedily passed out of the window to Bishop, who carried them safely to the ground. In the meantime Tizard had resumed his search, but as the room was full of smoke he was compelled to retire. We concur in the Chief Officer’s opinion that the conspicuous bravery displayed by the men warrants special recognition’ (Ref.
Report of the Fire Brigade Committee, 14 February 1895).
