Extract from the Society’s records:

‘Silver Fire Medal, Certificate of Thanks, and 30 shillings, to Samuel Tysoe, for having with others, rescued four people from the dwelling house on fire, 71A Tithebarn Street, on 4th June 1932.

About 4 a.m., Constable McMillan noticed smoke coming out of the top window, and two women leaning out of the top windows screaming. He went to the back of the premises followed by Tysoe. Going through the back door they ascended the narrow stairway to the parlour on the 1st floor, which room was full of smoke and burning fiercely. Placing handkerchiefs over their mouths they crossed this room to the foot of the narrow stair leading to the top floor. Ascending this, they found two boys, 10 and 14, standing in the middle of the front bedroom. Each seized a boy, they carried them down through the flames and smoke to the backyard.

In the meantime the Fire Brigade had arrived and the fire escape was run up to the front bedroom and the two girls were rescued by Police Sergeant Pugh through the windows, by way of the fire escape. The four rescued persons were removed to the Northern Hospital and treated for burns and shock. McMillan and Tysoe were also scorched’.
