Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society, Marine Medal, 3rd type, silver (Daniel Rogers, Boatman, for Saving Life on Several Occasions. Presented July 30, 1875) 4 clasps, Saving Life; For Saving Life July 12, 1881; For Saving Life June 26. 1883; For Saving Life April 29, 1887, with silver buckle on ribbon, in damaged case of issue, inside of lid with label, ‘Capt. J. Rogers, Labumam House, 16 Milton Road, Chesterton, Cambridge’; River Mersey Lifeboat Race Medal, 37mm., silver, hallmarks for Birmingham 1893, obverse: finely engraved scene of a lifeboat going to the aid of a sailing vessel, reverse: inscribed, ‘River Mersey Lifeboat Race, D. Rogers, member of Winning Crew, 23 April 1894’, ring suspension, first with slack suspension and slight edge bruising, good very fine and better (2) £500-600

In about 1874/75 the Society’s oval medal was replaced by a circular medal, being a smaller wearable version of the earlier medallion. The 3rd type medal was issued in gold, silver and in bronze.

Extracts from the Society’s Annual Reports:

‘To Daniel Rogers, boatman, for jumping into the River Mersey between the landing stage and the river wall, and rescuing a child, at considerable risk, on the 5th July 1875, and in recognition of many previous rescues, a Silver Medal’.

‘To Daniel Rogers, boatman, for having jumped into the Herculaneum Basin on 14th February 1877, and, at great risk of being crushed between a vessel and the dock wall - the dock gates being open and a considerable swell running in - having rescued a man who had fallen overboard, a Silver Bar to his medal, and a pecuniary award’.

‘A Silver Clasp to Daniel Rogers, boatman, for having jumped into the River Mersey with a lifebuoy and rescued a man who had attempted to commit suicide, on 12th July 1881. (This is the seventh rescue Rogers has performed)’.

‘30s and a Silver Clasp to his Medal to Daniel Rogers, boatman, for having jumped into the River Mersey from the landing stage, and saved a man who had attempted suicide, on 26th June 1883.

‘A Silver Clasp and 20s. to Daniel Rogers, boatman, for having jumped into the River Mersey and rescued a woman who had jumped overboard from a Woodside ferry steamer, and made a determined effort to drown herself, on 29th April 1887’.
