‘29 March 1857: Shortly after midnight the St. Agnes schooner Trevaunance was wrecked in an easterly gale off Porthcawl, Glamorgan, and sank immediately. Her four man crew took to the masthead and remained there for several hours until daybreak. A boat launched with three Pilots and a seaman, but it could not reach the wreck as heavy seas were breaking over the sands at low tide. Later, in the dark, it became obvious that disaster was imminent, and the four men rushed into the surf and took off the three survivors - one other had already drowned’ (Ref. Lifeboat Gallantry, by Barry Cox).

Pilots John Jones, James Pearse and Thomas Pearse, and Seaman George Clarke were each awarded the R.N.L.I. Medal in silver. The medal to James Pearse was sold as part of the J. B. Hayward Collection, Spink, 7 November 1995.
