D.C.M. London Gazette 18 February 1919:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 29 September 1918, near Ascension Valley. When the Battery came under severe shell fire he went out in the open and rendered valuable aid dressing and evacuating the wounded. He showed great presence of mind in crossing the shelled area to attend to a man whose arm was shattered, and undoubtedly saved his life.’
Shannon, a native of Wigan, was serving in C/232nd (North Midland) Artillery Brigade, R.F.A (Territorials) at the time of the above cited deeds.
