Herbert Cottee was born on 19 October 1880. He received a commission in the Royal Field Artillery in April 1915 and was promoted to Lieutenant in April 1917 having earlier held the rank of Acting Major. On 31 December 1916 he is recorded as being the officer commanding (Major) of “C” Battery, 168th Brigade R.F.A. He retired from the Royal Artillery on 17 October 1920 and was granted the rank of Major in November 1920.
