Edward Smallman enlisted into the R.N.A.S. as a Petty Officer Mechanic (E) on 3 May 1915. Based on President II, he served in the Armoured Car Division in France until December 1915. Later commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, he died of disease on 19 November 1916. He was buried in Richmond Cemetery, Surrey.
