William Young was born in Brighton, Sussex. A Labourer by occupation and having served in the Militia, he attested for the Hampshire Regiment at Brighton on 8 June 1880, aged 20 years. With the 1st Battalion, he served in Malta, July 1884-January 1886; India, January 1886-November 1888; Burma, November 1888-February 1891 and India again, February 1891-May 1901. He was discharged on 22 June 1901 on the termination of his period of engagement. Sold with copied service papers.
