Charles Edward George Vesey was born in St. Leonard’s, Sussex in May 1871 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in February 1891. Advanced to Lieutenant in February 1894, he was actively engaged in the Ashanti Expedition, remaining at Kumassi until February 1896, ‘for special duty with Captain G. Phillips, R.E.’. Having then served in Singapore, he was stationed in Egypt in the rank of Major on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, but quickly returned home and was embarked for France in early November. He was subsequently C.R.E. of 5 Division from July 1915 until April 1916, a half-Colonel in 7 Corps Troops from April 1917 until October 1918, and was twice mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 17 February and 22 June 1915 refer).
