India General Service 1908-35, 1 clasp, Afghanistan N.W.F. 1919 (Lt. A. Laithwaite, London Regt.) minor edge bruise, good very fine £200-250

D.S.O. London Gazette 17 December 1917 (details 23 April 1918). ‘2nd Lt, London Regt.’ ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In spite of being wounded during the advance towards his objective he continued to lead his men and was wounded again on six different occasions but refused to give in and again pressed on with a view to gaining more ground. While so advancing he was wounded for the eighth time, this time in the leg, which rendered it impossible for him to proceed further. By his magnificent endurance and example, he was able to lead his men across extremely difficult ground’.

2nd Lieutenant Allan Laithwaite served in the 17th Battalion London Regiment (Poplar & Stepney Rifles).
