John French was born in Peebles. A Traveller by occupation and a member of the Lanarckshire Yeomanry, he attested for short service with the Mounted Sharpshooter Corps at Edinburgh on 26 February 1900, aged 26 years, 11 months. With the 70th Company 18th Imperial Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) he served in South Africa, 7 April 1900-8 July 1901. He was discharged at his own request on 8 August 1901. Sold with copied service papers.
