Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, no clasp (Lieut. A. J. Payne, R.N., H.M.S. Monarch) officially engraved naming, some edge bruising, very fine £240-280

Arthur John Payne was born on 17 January 1872, the eldest son of Rev. Dr. Payne, Rector of Delamere, Cheshire and former chaplain in the Navy. He entered the Royal Navy as a Cadet in July 1885 and was appointed a Midshipman in November 1887, Acting Sub-Lieutenant in November 1891; Sub-Lieutenant in February 1892 and Lieutenant in June 1896. He served aboard the Monarch, May 1900-May 1903. He was appointed Lieutenant of the Tauranga on the Australia Station in September 1903. On 13 October 1904 Lieutenant Payne was washed overboard and drowned in a gale off the New Zealand coast. Sold with copied service paper and newspaper report of his death.
