Alexander McKendrick first served in the Egyptian theatre of war from 22 June 1915 with the Queen’s Own Royal Glasgow Yeomanry, being commissioned into the Highland Light Infantry on 7 March 1918 and attached to the 12th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers, with whom he gained the award of the Military Cross for service on the Western Front.
