Leslie Ray Paul Backhouse was born on 20 June 1896. From Ipswich, Suffolk and a Clerk in civilian life, he was appointed as 2nd Lieutenant on Probation in the R.F.C. on 19 December 1917. His rank was confirmed on 12 June 1918 and he was transferred to the Unemployed List on 5 April 1919. Appointed a Flight Officer with the R.A.F.V.R. Training Branch in March 1950, he was later advanced to Acting Flight Lieutenant.
