Arthur Slade Summers Sansford was born in Portsea, Hampshire, on 2 February 1878. A Clerk by occupation he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in June 1893, being advanced to Boy 1st Class in June 1894. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman when on the Anson in February 1896; Able Seaman when again on the Anson in August 1897 and Leading Seaman when based at Vernon in February 1905. He was promoted to the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class at Vernon in December 1905 and Petty Officer 1st Class on Superb in November 1910. With the onset of war he was based at Victory II but in November 1915 he was based on the submarine depot ship Dolphin and then from January 1916 on the submarine depot ship Maidstone. He was killed whilst serving on the submarine E.26 in the North Sea on 6 July 1916. Sold with a folder containing copied service papers and other research.
