Four: Acting Serjeant W. Cochrane, Army Veterinary Corps, late 11th and 13th Hussars

1914 Star, with clasp (6025 Pte., 11/Hrs.); British War and Victory Medals (6025 A. Sjt., 13-Hrs.); Army Meritorious Service Medal, G.V.R., 1st issue (1042 A. Sjt., A.V.C.) very fine (8) £280-320

M.S.M. London Gazette 1 January 1918. ‘... in recognition of valuable services rendered with the Armies in the Field during the present war’.

Private William Cochrane, from Ardrossan, having previously served with the 13th Hussars, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 16 August 1914 with the 11th Hussars. Later in the war he served with the 13th Hussars and A.V.C.

Sold with two ‘13th Hussars’ Inter-Squadron Football Cup Medals, silver, hallmarks for Birmingham 1905 and 1906 respectively, one inscribed, ‘W. Cochrane, “A” Squadron 1905’; the other similarly inscribed, dated 1908; together with a silver medal, hallmarks for Birmingham 1917, inscribed, ‘XIII Cps. Horse Show, France, 1918’ and ‘2nd Tent Pegging (O.R.) Sgt. W. Cochran, M.V.S. 4 Div.’, these three medals worn; and with Voluntary Medical Service Medal (W. Cochrane). Together with copied m.i.c. and gazette extract.
