Edwin George Cordwell was born in Chatham, Kent. A Tailor by occupation, he attested for service with the Dorsetshire Regiment at Belfast on 1 December 1893, aged 15 years, 11 months. With the 2nd Battalion Dorset Regiment he served in Gibraltar, October 1896-January 1897; Malta, January 1897-February 1899, and South Africa, October 1899-October 1902. In February 1909, having attained the rank of Sergeant with the Dorsets, he was placed on the Supernumerary List and was employed by the Ordnance Department. In July 1907 he was transferred to the Indian Unattached List for employment as a Store-Sergeant in the Indian Ordnance Department. With the I.O.D. he was promoted to Sub-Conductor in January 1918 and Conductor in August 1922 and served in South Persia, November 1918-September 1919. He was promoted to Assistant Commissary and Lieutenant in November 1929 and Captain and Deputy Commissary in November 1932. Captain Cordwell retired on 31 December 1932.
