Edward Wood was born in Hamstreet, Ashford, Kent. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for service in the Royal West Surrey Regiment on 22 January 1896, aged 23 years, 11 months. Promoted to Lance-Serjeant in March 1898, he was employed with the West African Regiment, April-September 1898 and served in Sierra Leone. Returning to his parent regiment, he served in South Africa, October 1899-March 1904 and attained the rank of Serjeant in November 1899. Serjeant Wood was severely wounded at the battle of Colenso, 15 December 1899 - receiving a gunshot wound to the temple. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1904.
