Robert Sinclair was born in Edinburgh. A Draper by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Royal Scots, he attested for service in the Scots Guards at Edinburgh on 17 February 1897. With them he served in South Africa, 21 October 1899-4 October 1902. He was discharged as medically unfit on 23 May 1905.
