William Styles was born in Rickmansworth, near Watford, Hertfordshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for service in the 66th Regiment on 20 September 1864. In March the following year he was transferred to the Royal Artillery and was ranked as a Gunner. He served in India, September 1866-February 1880, being awarded the medal for Afghanistan. Attaining the rank of Battery Sergeant-Major in February 1879, he was discharged at the termination of his second period of limited engagement, on 22 September 1885. Sold with copied service papers.
