Henry Robinson, who was appointed a Commissary Clerk in Nova Scotia in February 1844, was first commissioned as Deputy Assistant Commissary General in December 1846. Having then served in South Africa from April 1851 until March 1854, he was advanced to Assistant Commissary General in January 1856 and served in China from November 1859 to April 1861. Thereafter, he remained employed in the U.K., gaining advancement to Deputy Commissary General in August 1868 and, upon the formation of the Control Department in January 1870, to Deputy Controller, which last appointment ranked with full Colonel. Robinson was made a Companion of the Bath in 1858.
