Henry Vincent Eyre was appointed a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant in the 7th (Service) Battalion the Buffs on 17 December 1914. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 27 July 1915 and in mid-1916 he transferred to the 8th Battalion. With the battalion he was wounded on 3 September 1916 when the Battalion attacked from Worcester Trench in the Battle of the Somme. The runners entrusted with liaising with the adjacent brigade with regard to the time of the attack were killed. The Buffs were therefore late in leaving their trenches and were immediately hit by the enemy barrage. A second attack, which failed later in the day, also suffered from poor artillery support. The Buffs suffered 113 casualties on 3 September. Eyre recovered from his wounds and rejoined the 7th Battalion and was promoted Lieutenant on 27 May 1917.
