George Frederick Lacy Hayes was born in Calcutta on 13 September 1865 (elsewhere given as 28 March 1866). A Clerk by occupation, he enlisted into the Norfolk Regiment at Cork on 13 February 1883. He served seven years with the Norfolks, two years with the Military Staff Corps and twelve years with the Army Pay Corps, during which time he served in India, South Africa and Burma.
