John Greig was born on 16 June 1837. Qualifying as a M.D., he became an Assistant Surgeon with the 23rd Foot in December 1858, and with the Royal Artillery in January 1865. Transferred to the Royal Military College in March 1867, he returned to the Royal Artillery in November 1872. Advanced to Surgeon in the Army Medical Department in March 1873 and to Surgeon-Major in Major 1874, he served as such in the Afghan War, 1878-80. Greig was placed on Retired Pay in August 1881.
