Naval General Service 1793-1840, 1 clasp, Gluckstadt 5 Jany 1814 (T. S. Scriven, Midshipman) edge bruise, otherwise very fine £4000-4500

Thomas Swain Scriven was born on 29 May 1796, at Weymouth, Dorset, and entered the Navy in December 1809 as a Midshipman on board the Neptune 98. He served during the war with France in the West Indies, on the coast of France and in the North Sea in the Blobde and Statira frigates, Arrow schooner, Plover sloop, and Prince 98. Whilst Midshipman of Arrow, commanded by his brother Lieutenant (later Commander, C.B.) Thomas Scriven, he took part in the action with the French privateer L’Aigle, and batteries near the Penmarks. As Midshipman of the Piercer in the North Sea, he assisted at the reduction of Cuxhaven and Gluckstadt, and was intrusted with the command, off Hamburgh, of gun-boat No 4. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 26 December 1822, and served subsequently in the Coast Guard. After leaving the Coast Guard, Lieutenant Scriven commanded successively the Weymouth and Dorset packets Cuckoo, Widgeon and Princess Alice.
