Hammer Price:
£550

John Baliol (1292-1296), First coinage, Halfpenny, St. Andrews, rev. mullet in first and fourth quarters only, 0.65g/9h (cf. DNW 59, lot 982; SCBI 35 –; B –; S –). Only about fine but excessively rare, the third known example (£500-600)

Provenance:
Found in Dorset.

Apparently from the same dies as the first specimen, also found in Dorset and sold by DNW in October 2003, and the second (SNC February 2008, SC 669). To judge by the number of Scottish coins being found in the county there must have been significant trading links between Scotland and this part of the south coast in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries
