James McBey (1883-1959), one of Scotland’s best known artists, started producing his etchings while working as a clerk at the North of Scotland Bank Ltd in Aberdeen in 1907. In 1910 he left the bank, set up a studio and became a full-time artist. His main influences were Whistler and Rembrandt, and many of his early works were of coastal scenes in the area. During the First World War he was an official war artist in France and Palestine.
