A magnificent cased silver-gilt officer’s presentation sword of the 4th. East York Artillery Volunteers, the straight 87cm flat-solid section blade by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, No.12733 for1863, finely etched for its entire length with panels containing intricate foliate patterns, strapwork etc, reversed and intwined VR cypher, the arms of York, an English rose, a Scots thistle, regimental device of the 4th. East Yorks Artillery Volunteers, crossed cannons and motto ‘ Tu Ebor ‘ and within a central panel a presentation inscription, ‘Presented to Colonel The Right Honourable Lord Londesborough on his marriage by Major Brooshooft and officers of the 4th. East York Artillery Volunteers as a mark of their esteem and regard, Hull 10th. September 1863’, solid silver-gilt hilt mounts, each part with prominent HM for London 1863 Makers touch mark RH three bar guard similar to that of the 1821 pattern gothic hilt, the cartouche to the guard filled with the regimental device of the 4th. East York Artillery Volunteers cast and chased and surounded by oakleaves, the inside of the guard finely engraved overall with floral scrolls, the regimental motif again repeated by engraving, stepped pommel, the backstrap again with foliate engraving en-suite, fish-skin covered grip bound with silver wire, retaining a gold bullion sword knot, complete with its solid silver-gilt scabbard again with prominent HM, contained in its fine quality walnut box, the interior close fitted for the sword and lined with purple velvet, the four corners with shaped brass fittings and a central oval copper-gilt escucheon engraved with the arms and supporters of the recipiant, blade a little polished, minor scuffing to box, otherwise fine condition overall £2500-3000
