George Graham (†1974), was living in Longsight, Manchester, at the time of the award. A watchmaker and jeweller by trade, he later lived at Gatley. Herbert Birley (1821-90), chairman of the Manchester School Board from its inception in 1870 until 1885; the prize and medal was instituted in 1895
