Dublin, Royal Veterinary College of Ireland, a silver award medal, unsigned, arms in trilobe, rev. wreath, named (Awarded to J.H.M. Hughes for Surgery, Session 1924-25), 51mm. Extremely fine and toned; in blue fitted case by Edmond Johnson Ltd, Diamond Merchants, Grafton street, Dublin (£50-70)

In 1894 the ‘Promoters of a Veterinary School of Medicine for Ireland’, led by Sir Christopher Nixon, met to discuss establishing a veterinary college in Dublin. The new college, based in Ballsbridge, was incorporated by Royal Charter and began its work in October 1900. Veterinary surgeons educated at the college were examined and registered by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in London. The College was taken over by the Department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction in 1914 which owned, controlled and staffed it until the Second World War
