The Reverend Sidney Jenkins Jones, was minister of the Shooter’s Hill Road Baptist Church, Blackheath, when he was nominated to serve with the British Expeditionary Force as a Chaplain representing the United Navy and Army Board of the Four Denominations (The Baptist, Congregational, Primitive Methodist and United Methodist Churches) in January 1915. He was confirmed as a Chaplain to the Forces, 4th Class, on 5 October 1915, and proceeded on Foreign Service 11 days later. In France he was attached to the Guards Division. By the end of the war he had been awarded the Military Cross and promoted to Chaplain to the Forces 2nd Class, ranking as a Lieutenant-Colonel. On 21 November 1918, he relinquished his commission in the Army upon his appointment as Principal Chaplain of the Royal Air Force in the United Kingdom for the United Board. His M.I.D. has not been confirmed.
